Supporting a Child Impacted by Cancer Webinar
On Tuesday May 25th at 11am Dr Mairead Brennan and Dr Cathy O’Sullivan will host a free webinar on how to Support a Child Impacted by Cancer.
Why do we need to talk about cancer with children?
Kids are observant – they know when something is up and will pick up on stress. Kids need the chance to talk and ask questions. It is important that they are involved.
How do we talk to children about cancer?!
Be open and honest – honesty builds trust
Give then developmentally appropriate information – use words that they will hear, e.g. cancer, medicine, chemotherapy
Explain what is going on and give them time to ask questions – avoid talking about it too close to bedtime
Encourage them to ask any questions they might have, remember it is ok to say you don’t have all the answers
Keep the conversation going
Make sure to look after yourself too
Children learn by watching you – by expressing your emotion and talking, children learn vital life skills to cope with stressful life situations.
